Our Bubble: Barn of Monkeys

The team behind Barn of Monkeys are out-of-the-box thinkers – but, when it comes to unveiling their debut collection, they’ve opted to be as close to the action as possible. 

Portugal-based Barn of Monkeys specialises in cool, sustainable kidswear for two to 16 year olds. Its founders are passionate creatives with 15 years of industry-experience – and it’s this combination of commercial awareness and artistic integrity that led them to apply for Bubble S/S18. In another exclusive 'Our Bubble' Q&A, the brand's Cláudia Senra (who heads-up international expansion and business development) explains why London is the perfect launch-pad for their first collection... 


Hello Cláudia! So, tell us more about Barn of Monkeys. When, where, how and why was the label founded?

Barn of Monkeys is a new kid's fashion brand, designed for children and teenagers aged 2 to 16. It will be officially launched this year at various events, with a debut collection titled DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE SS18.


Sophisticated and minimalist, the collection tells the story of a man who has travelled around the world in 80 days in order to win a bet, and prove that anything is possible as long as we can imagine it. We believe that inspiration is the best gift grownups have to offer future generations, encouraging them to explore the limits of their creative minds and do something extraordinary!
Our team is composed of skilled professionals, who have been working with world-renowned fashion brands for 15 years. We came together to create a unique kids brand, that would speak the language of the new generation while engaging parents as well. More than a collection, we want to present a new concept of sustainable fashion, using the best organic cotton, GOTS certified, and appealing to the sense of social responsibility we all owe to the environment.


And why have you decided to unveil the debut collection at Bubble London this season? 

When it comes to presenting our brand and first collection to the world, we want to be as close as possible to the best of the kid's fashion market. Bubble London is attended by retailers from across the globe, and it’s a great honor to have been one of the brands accepted to show at this season's edition! London is one of the world’s fashion capitals – and, we believe, the perfect place to debut Barn of Monkeys.


How will you be preparing for the show, and what are you hoping to achieve?

We've got plenty of surprises in store for our visitors! We like to see ourselves as out-of-the-box thinkers with impeccable taste, and aim to meet retailers’ exacting standards. Expect artful decoration, eco-friendly furniture, tailored accessories and customized gifts. Our multi-lingual team will be on hand to ensure that everyone’s questions are answered. We want to be close to our customers, get to know them better and understand their needs, in order to provide the best service we possibly can.

You certainly sound well-prepared! But what challenges have you faced in the course of founding Barn of Monkeys? And what single piece of advice would you give to other new brands?

The last few months have been exhausting. Launching a brand from scratch requires sleepless nights, a tireless team – and, of course, years of experience in the fashion world helps. A fashion collection is a work of art, with many creators who think alike and aspire to inspire!

The most difficult part of the process is deciding what kind of message you want to convey through the clothes, and building all the communications accordingly. Beyond that, trying to create garments suitable for such a wide age range, and which will please both parents and youngsters, in a world where new trends are created everyday – that was a real challenge!
The best piece of advice we can give new designers is to stay loyal to their creative vision, be proud to think differently, put the utmost effort into creating their collection, remember to stay eco-friendly – and, of course, demand the impossible!
